Winston Fire Engine Rear ended at Accident Scene

Yesterday evening at 08:08 p.m. DCFD2 firefighters responded to a report of an accident on the east bound of Highway 42 near its east intersection with Grange Road.  The accident involved a male pedestrian that had apparently been struck by a semi while he was on the Highway median.  Dispatched to this initial accident were an ambulance and a Chief Officer from DCFD2, and a fire engine from the Winston Dillard Fire District.

While approaching the scene of the initial accident, the Winston fire engine was rear ended by a two door sedan. The female occupant of the sedan became trapped between the wreckage due to the force of the impact.  After requesting immediately that additional resources be dispatched to deal with this second accident, the Winston’s fire engine crew began providing emergency medical care to the occupant of the vehicle.
Meantime, upon its arrival at the scene at 08:14 p.m. the crew of the initial DCFD2 ambulance began providing care to the male that had been struck by the semi, who came to rest of the east, bound shoulder of Highway 42.

Additional resources consisting of two ambulances, and a fire engine with extrication equipment from DCFD2 were dispatched to the scene at 08:14 p.m. These crews worked feverishly with the “jaws of life” to free up the occupant of the sedan.  They also examined the two man crew of Winston engine for injuries.
Both the victims of these accidents sustained serious injuries, and were transported to Mercy Medical Center.  The crew from the Winston engine was also transported to Mercy medical center for further observation.
Oregon State Police, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Winston Police assisted at the scene with traffic control, and are presently investigating both accidents.

DCFD2 firefighters would like to remind motorists to always pay extreme attention when driving in the proximity of emergency vehicles operating at or approaching the scene of an incident.

Busy Night for DCFD2 Firefighters; Sutherlin House Lost to Fire

On September 28th at 05:48 p.m. DCFD2 firefighters were called to a house fire at 290 E Third Avenue in Sutherlin.  The first arriving unit (5 minutes and 13 seconds later according to the 911 log) found heavy fire to the front of the home and spreading to the back of it and into the attic. A total of 20 firefighters (7 off-duty firefighters and 5 volunteer firefighters) responded to the scene with 2 fire engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 brush engine, 1 ambulance, and 2 command units and brought the fire under control at 06:24 p.m. (30 minutes after the arrival of the first unit). The occupants of the house-a mother and daughter family sustained minor burns while attempting to extinguish the fire.  They were treated and released at the scene by DCFD2 Paramedics and are staying with friends.  Firefighters remained on scene until 08:40 p.m. conducting mop up operations to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished.  DCFD2 fire investigators determined that the fire originated in the bedroom on the front of the house.  The fire started on the light fixture hanging off the ceiling on the center of the room from where it extended into the attic space, as well as to combustible items (clothing, paper, carpet, etc.) present on the floor.  Preliminary damage is estimated at $107.000.  Oakland Rural Fire Protection District and Roseburg Fire Department also assisted at the scene with one fire engine, 1 command unit and 4 personnel.

Between the hours of 05:48 p.m. and 08:40 p.m. on September 28th, while working a the fire scene on Third Avenue DCFD2 crews also responded to a fire alarm sounding call at the Murphy Plywood Mill), and to two calls for emergency medical assistance at 1200 E Central Avenue and 1128 W Central Avenue. DCFD2 Fire Chief Greg Marlar said “there is no question that the great call back response from both off-duty and volunteer staff enabled us to continue providing seamless service to the residents of Sutherlin during an unusually busy night for firefighters.”

Early Morning Structure Fire Damages Roseburg Home

Douglas County Fire District No. 2 firefighters responded to a structure fire early Friday morning.  Units were dispatched to a fire at 983 Plateau Drive in Roseburg at 0255 A.M. Friday.  First arriving firefighters found a single wide manufactured home with an attached porch.  The porch was burning rapidly and the fire was threatening the manufactured home.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and checked the home to make sure the fire did not spread into the home.  The home was filled with smoke but the fire did not extend into the home.  Firefighters used large fans to remove the smoke from the home.

An occupant of the home (name unavailable at this time) has limited mobility and had to be assisted from the home and into his wheel chair.  Fire officials are thankful that the fire was recognized while it was burning on the porch and not extended to the manufactured home.  Residents with disabilities are at a significantly greater risk of being injured in a residential fire due to the increased time it takes to evacuate.

The home was owned by Flossie Lillard.  The Red Cross responded to the scene and assisted the home owner.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

No damage estimate is available at this time.

10 firefighters , 3 fire engines , and one command unit responded to the scene.
