Fire Prevention Week has been around for decades. Because of it and similar events and campaigns, great strides have been made over the years in delivering fire safety and injury prevention education to the public. As a result, fire-caused fatalities have dropped from an average of 15,000 deaths per year a fpw10-1century ago to an average of 3,000 deaths per year during the last several decades. This decrease can also be attributed to the advent and promotion of smoke alarms, improvements in built in fire protection and life safety requirements on building and fire codes, advances in fire protection systems technologies, and other fire prevention measures
