On Thursday, July 29, 2010, at 2:31 AM, 9 Douglas County Fire District No.2 (DCFD.2) firefighters with 2 fire engines, 1 command unit, and 1 brush unit under the command of Battalion Chief Barry Hutchings; assisted by 4 firefighters with 1 engine and 1 brush unit from Oakland Fire District responded to a reported structure fire at 2678 Westlake Ave. in Sutherlin.
The initial call into the 911 center was received at 2:31 AM with a description of heavy flames seen south of Dove Tale Lane in Sutherlin. The first engine arrived at 2:40 AM (9 minutes later), and found a detached garage on the back side of the property well involved in fire with flames showing through the roof and both gable ends of the structure.
Due to the advanced stage of the fire, and the unstable condition of the roof and some of its structural elements, firefighters on the first arriving units could not immediately enter the building and were forced to attack the fire by applying large amounts of water from the exterior of the structure.
The fire was declared under control at 3:02 AM (22 minutes later.); although, firefighters remained on scene until 5:24 AM (1 hour and 44 minutes) conducting overhaul and mop up operations to ensure that the fire would not rekindle.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred during this incident. Fire losses are estimated to be between $40,000.00 and $60,000.00. The cause of the fire is been investigated by Douglas County Fire District No.2 Fire Investigation Team .
